Here’s a round up of things I sewed in 2025! It was a good sewing year for me. This a lot of pictures so I divided it up into sections.

Clothing

This year I got back into sewing garments for myself. Here’s some of what I made. (I don’t seem to have taken pictures of everything)

And I made three of these tunics but I only found pictures of two of them

I also made several shirts for the kid, but again didn’t photo document them very well. But here’s one picture:

Doll Clothing

I sewed a lot of clothing for my 18 inch doll! Mostly Tang dynasty inspired hanfu. I used this project to learn more about hanfu and also pattern drafting. I drafted all the hanfu patterns using a book and I feel more confident about pattern drafting now. (Maybe not confident enough to draft something for me)

Here’s the first outfit I made:

Then I decided I wanted to make a round collar robe for that hufu/crossdressing girl look. I started by making a jacket -- it took several tries to get the pattern right

All those versions really paid off though because my first try and a robe went perfectly:

Then I made a reversible robe – I wanted to do that open collar look I’ve been seeing in dramas

And here’s the second lined robe I made

I also did Tang Dynasty girl outfit:

And in not hanfu doll clothing I altered a pattern so I could make my doll a matching tunic to mine

Quilts

I didn’t sew a lot of quilts in 2025 – I was working on other things. I did send two quilt tops to a friend to quilt and then finish those quilts though. Here some pictures:

I also sewed up a quilt top which I’d cut out all the pieces ages ago but then left sitting around for a while.

I don’t have any specific goals for 2026 sewing, but I have several quilt tops in various stages of completion that I hope to work on. I also have another top for myself cut out, and some fun fabric set aside for other garment projects. And I have plenty of ideas for more doll clothing too!

Happy new year, everyone!

As you can guess, things have been quiet around here as December was a busy month. I hope you’ve had a good holiday season, and can start fresh in the new year.

We have one more month until the challenge deadline. How are your shrines coming along? Do you have a preferred order of tackling things, and how do you set priorities in light of the deadline? What are your thoughts on uploading a shrine in unfinished state?

I hope we’ll pull through together and can kick off 2026 with some new shrines! :D

Folks are applying to the next round of Top-Level Domain creation (the .net, .com, , .social etc) to create .meow which would be run by a non-profit supporting queer organizations! So people could have a domain ending in .meow while helping with a good cause! Howdy! My screenplay takes place in rural North Dakota in November 1996, and two teenage characters are fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I know the bat'leth as a weapon was introduced in the show long ago, but when did replicas and toys become widely sold? Would it be realistic for a working-class young woman to have a mini bat'leth she could use as a knife in that year? I also read that the mek'leth (smaller Klingon scimitar) was introduced in DS9 and also appeared in First Contact. How early were replicas of those available to fans?
Thanks a million to you all! Would also love to hear any other miscellaneous stories or details of the TNG+DS9 fandom of the 90s, to give some extra oomph and care to an underrepresented community :)

Thought people might be interested in this article "Translated Chinese Literature: New Fiction" from China Books Review.

2025 has seen a bumper crop for Chinese literature in translation. We recommend five recent titles, from gritty tales of the northeast to conjoined fiction from Hong Kong.

Of course, no danmei or baihe on the list, that's not nearly ~literary~ enough for this kinda thing, but I still thought it was nice to learn about some other titles outside my usual c-novel reading...

It’s been ages since I did one of these! But I haven’t been reading or watching much that I want to talk about the last couple of months. I read a couple of things that I just don’t have anything to say about, and a ton of fic which I never include in these round ups. And I’ve watched almost nothing – not even mini dramas

But there’s couple of things I did want to talk about and I thought it would be nice to post about the last little bit of 2025 media before I start a new running notes document for the new year.

Crush of Music—This Chinese reality show is the one thing I have been watching recently. Crush of music is a show where songwriters demo original songs and then through a mildly gameifed process are matched with a singer (or two) who then performs the song. It’s the second season of Melody Journey, but I have no idea why the English title is different (the Chinese title is the same) It's a really fun low stress show and features some of my favorite singers! (Liu Yuning and Zhou Shen) I can't really rec the show though because the subtitles are very very bad -- I'm just watching anyway even though I can only understand about half of what people are saying. But it turns out that not understanding the show makes for very slow watching

Off Menu: A Graphic Novel written by Oliver Gerlach drawn by Kelsi Jo Silva—Cute YA graphic novel in D&D-ish world. It’s about a cook called Soup – kind of a coming of age thing with lots of cooking and community. Very Charming!

The Fellowship of The Ring— R has been reading LotR to the kid, they haven’t quite finished but they are close enough to done that we watched the 1st movie. I’ve never been huge into LotR but it was fun to watch – so many classic lines! I did kinda find myself wishing that the characters' names would show up on screen the first time they appear the way they do in the cdrama I watch. NZ remains very beautiful!

Midorikawa Kata was born in 1872 (or maybe 1869?) in Tottori, where her father was a samurai retainer; her maiden name was Wada, and after her father led a failed rebellion she was adopted as a baby by the Hori family, of similar rank. At age fifteen, she began to study Chinese classics and etiquette at the local temple in order to prepare for marriage. The following year, she married Miki Setsujiro, son of a local banker. She was seventeen when her first son, Masao, was born, and twenty when his brother Tsutomu appeared.

In 1895, aged twenty-three, she divorced Setsujiro on account of his infidelity and went to Tokyo, taking Tsutomu with her. She was escorted en route by seventeen-year-old Midorikawa Kikuo, on his way to enter university. In Tokyo, she consigned Tsutomu to his father’s family and entered the nursing school affiliated with Tokyo Imperial University, where she was also baptized. She graduated in 1897; although her good grades led to a suggestion of studying in Germany, she worked as a visiting nurse for five years and then went to Hokkaido to marry Kikuo, who was working as a journalist in Otaru, writing pacifist and anti-authoritarian editorials protesting offenses against the Ainu as well as the Ashio Copper Mine problem; he spent the rest of his life on the authorities’ list of left-wing suspicious characters, followed by policemen.

Now with a son and three daughters, they returned to Tokyo in 1908, where Kata worked as a nurse while raising her children; her income was sometimes all the family had during the periods when Kikuo’s left-wing views put him out of work. In 1919, she learned about Mrs. Pankhurst and the women’s temperance movement in the UK from Kikuo while he was working there, and set up a Tokyo branch on her own. In 1925, she established a Women’s Suffrage League, arguing for women’s rights from the housewife’s perspective, and submitting petitions on women’s suffrage and women’s rights in general to the Imperial Diet. In 1927 she founded the Women’s Rights Protection Association, issuing the journal Joken [Women’s Rights].

Kikuo died in 1934. In 1945, when Kata was seventy-three, women’s suffrage became a reality. She died in 1962 at the age of ninety, still fighting the Japan-US Security Treaty of 1960.

Between Kikuo, her children from both marriages, and Kata herself, they had a remarkably wide circle of notable friends, colleagues, and relatives. Her oldest son Masao, better known as the poet Miki Rofu, was part of the “Akai Tori [Red Bird]” children’s literature movement and well acquainted with Yamada Kosaku (Tsuneko Gauntlett’s brother); her son Michio, a movie cameraman, taught Ozu Yasujiro his trade, while her daughter Yoshiko was married to the director Uchida Tomu and their son was Uchida Issaku (known for directing the Kamen Rider movies). Sumiko, the oldest daughter, worked in broadcasting for NHK along with her husband; Kunie, daughter number two, was an academic, and Kiyo, the youngest, became director of Japan’s first facility for multiply disabled children. Kikuo’s professional and political life brought him into contact at varying points with the poet Ishikawa Takuboku (husband of Setsuko), the author Kobayashi Takiji, the revolutionaries Kotoku Shusui (lover of Kanno Suga) and Sakai Toshihiko, and the politician Hara Kei (husband of Sadako and Asa). Kata herself became involved, through her women’s rights activism, with Hiratsuka Raicho, Ichikawa Fusae, Yosano Akiko, and Nishikawa Fumiko among others.

Aha! it's Yuletide reveals time!

So my Yuletide recipient this year was

genarti, who is either just about to find out this fact from my post, or has known for weeks and is just biding her time to reveal her knowledge and I'm just about to find out that fact after she reads this. Stay tuned for breaking developments!

So, for her, I wrote The Villainous Princess Saves Her Kingdom, a fix-it fic for the kdrama Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born about the most dysfunctional lesbian of that whole cast of lesbians picking up various postcanon pieces of herself and incidentally the rest of the troupe.

HOWEVER, for obvious reasons, I had to immediately come up with a decoy fic, so from the beginning having read

raven's Yuletide letter at the same time I happened to be rereading The Dispossessed I decided I was also going to write a treat for

raven that I would present to

genarti as my assignment, which ended up as More A Comment Than A Question, a strange little timebending fic about Shevek's daughter contacting Laia Aseio Odo through time and space and not really necessarily making the most of it.

Tangled webs, etc; after I had confidently reported submitting my decoy fic on deadline to

genarti,

raven's prompt went to the pinch-hit list and I had to frantically fake a different panic than the panic I was actually feeling -- ANYWAY. Hilariously,

raven discovered my identity immediately due to the usernames reveal error whereas

genarti was at church through that entire event and thus remained completely oblivious (unless, of course, she isn't, see first paragraph above.) A very chaotic Yuletide on several fronts! But I had a lot of fun writing both fics although I would prefer not to be wrangling quite this much deception every year.

In non writing thoughts, by which I mean I wanted to talk about aikido and then realised that maybe I should mention watching a movie first, since I finally watched the new Benoit Blanc movie. xD

I watched Wake Up Dead Man today with

hafnia, who had seen it once before and was like "I am BITING MY TONGUE not to point out the REALLY GOOD FORESHADOWING", paused the movie at two points to tell me about (a) her opinions that the reading list in-universe could've been better (with her suggestions) and (b) A Science Complaint (while going "this is the only thing that annoys me about this movie"), and was delighted to agree with me about how well they used LIGHT. The cinematography was gorgeous, the plot was very fun, and I adored Father Jud and Martha and enjoyed going "ughhhh" about how awful many other characters were. The film quotes/references I caught were also great!

also my twin messaged me right as I was finishing the movie to tell me about a post he'd seen saying that the opening scene of the movie was filmed at the same location as Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" music video, including a tweet (bsky version) (bweet, my brain wants to say, but I think it's skeet. or just, y'know. tweet.) from Rian Johnson going "yes, it was, and I was the only person on set excited about this fact", which I thought was very funny in its own right and also incredible timing.

anyway, AIKIDO

Last night we had a new year's eve practice, and there weren't many people there, but—

There is so much joy in doing aikido on a mat where the practice is meant as meditation, and there are few enough people that you don't need to worry about throwing anyone into anyone else (or off the mat), and the people who are there are all advanced and so you don't need to worry too much about taking care of them (because their ukemi will take care of them).

Sensei also was like "you could take nidan tomorrow and be fine" when I said that it was sort of frustrating knowing that in this, the lead-up to when I'll be taking nidan (at the end of May), I'll probably not be practicing more than once a week on average. She's right! I know she's right! I could take it tomorrow if I were asked to!

But it'll be better with more practice and active reminders of the stuff we don't do very often. Reversals (uke becomes nage). Weapon take-aways. Some nage-holds-the-jo, maybe? I'm solid on everything else, I think, though it's always nice to review koshinage. Working with friends on shodan prep last year means that most of it's in my body via taking ukemi, anyway, which is good.

getyourwordsout with her this year, which should be fun. I'm doing it as a habit pledge, because that's usually not very hard for me and tracking wordcount seemed exhausting. (Which also means that Write Every Day folk will start seeing me around again in those posts. xD I have missed that since my writing brain plunged into a hole over the summer! I think I've crawled out of it now!)

anyway, VERY IMPORTANTLY, Yuletide creators have been revealed, so I can talk about what I wrote for it! :D

My assignment was for

china_shop, and we matched on The Spear Cuts Through Water, a book I adore and which I offered because I was like "okay if someone requests this fantastic book surely they will have ideas for what to write" and also the idea of having an excuse to read the book while thinking about the voice and feel of the prose was exciting.

I wrote a brief epilogue fic, barely over 1k: After the Moon Rose Anew (T, 1,048 words, Jun/Keema, post-canon)

Judging by all the lovely comments, I succeeded in my goal of matching the novel's prose! Most people commented on the voice! Considering how beautiful and lyrical the prose is, it's truly a joy and a relief to know I could match it for even a thousand words.

Also, it was just fun to reference as much as I could of what I found really cool about the prose: the layered POVs, the omniscient style that drifted between POV easily, the occasional brief asides to background POVs... Honestly, the poetics are easier for me to be confident in! I know I can do poetic prose; it's the smooth movement between heads that seems natural and is easy to follow that I wanted to learn from.

And

china_shop liked it, of course, which is the most important part of a gift—especially one for a friend!

Which: The odds of matching to a friend in Yuletide are... not that low if you both know you're in the same tiny fandom and that you're both going to request it, but I hadn't realised that

china_shop was going to request The Spear Cuts Through Water until after I'd already offered it, and she could of course not know I would offer it! Certainly we'd talked about the book before, but it's still very special to have this kind of match happen by chance. <3

The other fic I wrote for Yuletide was a pinch hit.

wolffyluna went up for PH, and one of the fandoms requested was Oathsworn, an actual play podcast I love. I knew that if WolffyLuna had listened to it, it was because of my promo posting about it. So, y'know. The pinch hit went up one evening, and I told myself that if it was still up when I got home from work the next day I could claim it.

It was still up. So. I claimed it, and proceeded to spend the weekend mainlining episode transcripts and internally screaming about what even I was going to write, oh god, this would've been a lot easier if I'd gotten it as an assignment (which I could have! I'd also offered Oathsworn!) due to the time crunch.

I'm very pleased with what I came up with, especially considering the time pressure. And WolffyLuna liked it, especially the scenes I added post-deadline because I was like "WAIT I NEED THIS TOO", which made me very happy that I'd taken the time to write and add them. <3

I dream of what I'll become next life (3.5k, T, CNTW, Waloot-centric) is a character study of my favorite character, and also includes a dive into the chosen of the gods, a specific religion within the world, and also Waloot's whole deal of being an ordinary person who died, came back, and was one of the most magically powerful people in the area by the time the story concluded. She has a lot of angst. I gave her a bit of time with some weird horses (as WolffyLuna requested!) as part of helping her deal with that.

This, and the gift WolffyLuna wrote for me (my suspicion that we'd be trading Oathsworn fics also factored into taking the PH), are the first works for the fandom on ao3! Yay for Yuletide! It's very exciting! I hope more people take a chance on this COMPLETE actual play podcast! An ongoing apocalypse, a last stand against the oncoming hordes, and a lot of people desperately doing their best to survive and be in community with each other despite not always liking each other very much!

As always, general feedback is welcome!

This year, we increased the nominations allowance from 4 fandoms to 5 fandoms. Since that worked okay, we anticipate continuing that next year.

We introduced a limited Do-Not-Match system. That was manageable so we're interested in repeating the same process next year - though it's possible it could grow beyond our capacity, so we don't want to guarantee it indefinitely.

We changed the deadline time and the reveals times. Those changes were based on mod availability, and it was really helpful to us to have multiple mods awake at the point of deadline and reveals. We'll need to base future deadline and reveals times on that priority, but since that isn't the only factor making deadlines and reveal times effective, we're interested to hear feedback too.

Next Yuletide, we may review franchise rules to make sure we're being consistent and fair. We may also specifically review rules for music videos.

As requested by a participant, we will also be adding a section to our rules on AO3 listing what you can expect from the mod team’s communications and conduct. We have had an internal Code of Conduct for several years but agree it would be helpful to share a public version.

Again, feedback on these or other topics is also welcome.

Happy New Year, dear friends! May this year be infinitely better than last for all of us.

Our NYE was very quiet. We ordered pizza with Ginny and Kas, and after they went home, it was just us and the clowder and a Christmas pudding with brandy butter. The clock is ticking on our vacation time, but at least we still have a few more days of it.

I've decided to take the bingo card approach of setting goals for the new year, and I almost have a full card. (Thinking of twenty-four goals is hard! I need one more, and have a couple of ideas.) Most of what I've put down aren't so much one-and-done things, although I've tried to make more of them list items that can be ticked off than things that are like "do [x] once a week"; this has led to a mixed bag containing both "watch twelve movies" (rather than "watch one movie a month") and "read one volume of manga each week". Six of the current twenty-three goals are media intake of various sorts. ^^;

This afternoon I took a bit of time and finally went through my shelf and a half of Japanese-related books (mostly language-learning, but a handful of cultural reference books) and pruned about half of them. That freed up a fair bit of space (for this moment, all of my cookbooks now fit on their bookcase!), but wasn't as big a cull as I'd sort of figured I'd manage once I got started. >.< I currently have no idea what to do with the culled books, though, so maybe I'll manage to prune some more while I get that figured out. Part of me still clings to this faint hope with no basis in reality that I might yet possibly someday take another stab at studying the language, so I've hung on to some of those books, but there are also a handful of language-focused ones that that could conceivably be useful for reference for work. (And I kept nearly all of the cultural cultural reference books. And both dictionaries...)
